About
MEET THE ARTIST
Leon Washington is 71 years old. He began painting over 30 years ago. In 1990, Leon was diagnosed with acute depression, schizophrenia and paranoia. In a treatment center for adults, he attended art therapy and that is when his talent was unleashed. His art is filled with vivid colors and bold designs. He has an instinctive sense of pattern, space, color and texture.
Leon’s art is primitive in that he is an untrained, self-taught artist. He says his art just comes to him. In the late 90’s, Leon’s large canvas pieces sold for $5,000.00 each. He blossoming art career was sidelined by death and displacement, which left Leon in a state of homelessness. He first lived in his car for a couple of years, and then, when he lost the car, he made himself a home on a covered bus bench, where he has lived for the past 6 or so years. Even without his easel, canvas and paints, Leon still creates, spending hours a day sketching with a pencil in a sketchbook.
Art critics have said that Leon’s work provokes strong emotions. There is a “punch and a magic to his work that is quite uncommon.” In our online gallery, we are offering 98 of Leon’s large canvas oil paintings. He paints eyes that will mesmerize you, leaving you thinking of the art piece for a long time.
The sale here of Leon’s work is to fund a permanent home for him. We appreciate your support and encouragement. It will be a blessing to the world to get Leon settled into a home so that he can get back to painting.
